Do I really need lightning protection for my home?

Homes on elevated terrain, near large trees, with metal roofs, or in areas with frequent thunderstorms are at higher risk. What is a lightning rod and how does it work?

A lightning rod (also called an air terminal) is a pointed metal conductor mounted at the highest points of a structure. It is connected via heavy-gauge copper or aluminum conductors to ground rods buried in the earth. When lightning strikes, the system provides a low-resistance path for the electrical current to safely travel into the ground. Modern systems are engineered to UL 96A and NFPA 780 standards and include multiple air terminals, conductor cables, ground rods, and surge protection devices.

What is the difference between UL 96A and NFPA 780?

NFPA 780 is the Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems published by the National Fire Protection Association — it defines the design and installation requirements. UL 96A is the Underwriters Laboratories standard for the installation of lightning protection systems, and a UL Master Label is issued to systems that have been inspected and certified as meeting those requirements. Do you offer lightning protection inspections for existing systems?

Yes. We inspect existing lightning protection systems to verify they still meet current UL 96A and NFPA 780 standards. Systems should be inspected every five years, or after any significant renovation, roof replacement, or nearby lightning strike. Our inspection includes a full visual assessment, continuity testing, and a written report with any recommended repairs.
